Drilon named LP chairman, Abaya is sec-gen
while Montesa designated director genera

Former Senate President Franklin Drilon has retained his former post as national chairman of the Liberal Party (LP) while Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo “Jun” Abaya has been designated as the party’s secretary general, LP President Mar Roxas announced today.

Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III was named Executive Vice President while former Education Assistant Secretary for Legal Affairs Bong Montessa was named Director General. Quezon Governor Raffy Nantes retained his position as party treasurer.

Following a LP tradition, Roxas was given a free hand to choose his set of officers following his election as party president replacing Drilon last November 26 at the Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan.  

Prior to election as LP president in 2004, Drilon served as party national chairman during the presidency of former Education Secretary Butch Abad. He replaced erstwhile LP National chairman Sen. Kiko Pangilinan who assumed the post after then Manila Mayor Lito Atienza was dropped from the LP roster in March 2006 for leading the controversial rump LP assembly at the Manila Hotel.

Aquino replaced Roxas as party EVP while Abaya took the place of former Bukidnon Rep. Neric Acosta who will now concentrate as Executive Director of the Council of Asian Liberal and Democrats (CALD).
